How to Freeze 5-Layer Dip
Freezing a 5-layer dip isn’t quite as simple as you might think. Since there is a wide range of ingredients in the different dips, we need to be careful about ensuring the flavour and texture are retained.
- Remove Some of the Packaging: Remove some of the general packaging from the 5-layer dip – if unopened. Otherwise, you can just discard the lid. You want to keep it in the tub itself.
- Wrap in Cling Film: Wrap the entire tub or bowl with cling film, and press the cling film directly to the surface of the dip. This will prevent the dip from oxidizing.
- Wrap in Foil: Wrap the film-wrapped package with a layer of heavy-duty foil. This will allow you to ensure that the dip doesn’t sustain anything in the way of damage in the freezer.
- Freeze: Place the tub in the centre of the freezer where it will keep for around 3 months.

Try Baking Paper Instead of Foil
In the two layers of freezer wrapping that we recommend just above, we use cling film and foil. Baking paper will work just as well as foil as the outermost layer! Try scrunching it up into a ball and unfurling it before wrapping it around the dip.
Press Cling Film Against the Cheese
As grated cheese is exposed to cold air, some of the fat from within the cheese can form on the external surface. This is perfectly safe, but it can look a little odd and unappetizing. To be sure this doesn’t happen, ensure that the cling film is placed directly against the cheese.
Consider the Weakest Ingredient
Unfortunately, 5-layer dip will only freeze as well as the weakest ingredient. The tomato salsa might freeze okay but the dairy-based dips will split and become a little grainy in the freezer.
How Long Can You Freeze 5-Layer Dip?
You can freeze a five-layer dip for around 3 months.
The only thing that might hold dip back is if your 5-layer dip has some meat. This is rare, but some recipes call for it. If your dip contains meat, we advise freezing it for a little less time. Meat is more liable to freezer burn, as the protein content will denature and freeze poorly.
A 5-layer dip will last for 2 to 3 days in the fridge. It will be safe for up to 5 days, but you may find that some of the layers have run into each other, diluting the flavours.

The simplest way to defrost a 5-layer dip is simply to transfer it to the fridge overnight. That will allow any ice crystals to thaw slowly and safely.
To be sure that a puddle of water doesn’t form in your fridge, place the bowl onto a tea towel – that will absorb the water.
Can You Refreeze 5-Layer Dip?
This depends on the ingredients in it. We mentioned before that a 5-layer dip can contain meat, which cannot be refrozen. Dairy also cannot be refrozen for the same reason:

Therefore, think about the ingredients before you do or don’t refreeze your dip. Meat and dairy cannot be refrozen, but the other ingredients in a 5-layer dip can be.
Does 5-Layer Dip Freeze Well?
Yes, it does freeze well overall, but it will only freeze as well as its weakest ingredient.
If you have a sour cream or cream cheese layer, then this will not freeze and thaw particularly well. You’ll end up with a split layer of sauce which will be hard to fix when assembled in a 5-layer dip.
Another layer that will not freeze particularly well is the guacamole. This will oxidize quickly in the freezer. When you come to eat it, it will taste fine but will have gone an off-putting brown colour.
